A five-year-old stopped me from ruining a wedding

Before you start to think the worst of me, I was not intentionally trying to ruin the wedding.  In fact, I was trying to make the bride relaxed and happy.  I had put together a playlist of amazing 80s tunes for her to get ready with.  Wedding jitters are a genuine thing, and my friend the bride was suffering badly from them on the morning of her wedding.

Suddenly, Rockwell’s Somebody’s watching me tune came on.  At first, all of us were singing along, including her five-year-old son (he has excellent 80s music knowledge!).  Then as the bride started to listen to the words she became more and more anxious.  “Everyone will be watching me walk down the aisle, what if I trip, I can’t walk in these shoes, I hate everyone looking at me!”, she started to rant and breathe heavily, with all the blood rushing from her face.

Then something incredibly sweet happened.  The bride’s son walked over to her, grabbed her hands and said don’t worry mummy if you get it wrong you can just do it again.  Just like the simplicity of that statement made a huge difference.   I watched as she took a deep breath and hugged her son.  His words had done the trick – she walked down the aisle without an issue and had an amazing wedding day.

It’s been a few years since this happened, but I was reminded of it when talking to a student last week who said to me what happens if I fail, I can’t take the pressure.  Obviously, no one wants to fail, but if you should have a bad day – then do it again, and resit the exam.  It hurts the ego yes, it’s a financial outlay yes, but you can and will do it again and pass it.  I have had a student who came to me after she failed her final exam 3 times – but she never gave up, passed on her fourth attempt and now has her MCIPS.  Remember you can resit at any exam series, life will not end if you do not get the result you want, and the more you put this amount of pressure on yourself, the more stressed you will be and the less information you will be likely to remember.
